Verkostungsnotiz November 2004:

Zwischendurch

2.

2001 Vignobles Jerome Quiot, Chateauneuf du Pape rouge, Rhone, France: Light garnet, fat tears. Sweet red fruit in the nose, alcoholic, red currant. Medium to full (only because of the alcohol) body, quite prominent fruity acidity, sweet-sour red currant fruit, slightly unbalanced. Sweet-sour drops in the aftertaste, medium finish, some hidden tannins behind the acidity. May be this is already a bad moment to taste a 2001 CdP.

Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 89.

Not blind. Decanted shortly before tasting. WMF Easy red wine glass.

5.

2002 Stefan Lang, Pinot Noir Reserve, Neckenmarkt, Burgenland, Austria: Dark but bright ruby, nice tears. Heavy dose of toasted barrique in the nose, vanilla, cacao, chocolate. Medium to full body, well balanced despite the high alcohol content of 14,5%, again toasted barrique dominates and masks the fruit completely, vanilla, dark chocolate, bit bitter, very good acidity. Medium to long finish, some acidity, persistent tannins. Interesting if a bit atypical Pinot Noir. Would be interesting to taste again after some ageing.

Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 89.

Not blind. Not decanted. WineStar white wine glasses.

6.

1989 Corino, Vigna Giachini, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy: Medium garnet, light brick, bright, nice tears, some sediment in the bottle. Mature nose, earthy, tar, minerals. Medium body, some sweet fruity acidity, very well balanced with fine smoky tannins, overall silky, echo of dark fruit. Fine finish with some acidity and good tannins, warm feeling. Very good now.

Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93.

Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking. Small ISO standard tasting glass.

7.

1981 Pegau, Reservée, Chateauneuf du Pape, Rhone, France: Dark garnet /medium ruby, no sign of age, fat tears, nearly no sediment, very clear, good fill. Slightly animal nose, very soft and (may be a bit too) lush dark mature fruit, nice acidity, excellent balanced with smoky tannins. Very good finish with fine smoky persistent tannins. Very good condition. Good match with roasted goose with red cabbage and potato dumpling.

Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 94.

Magnum. Not blind. Not decanted. Standard stemware, kind of Syrah shape.

8.

1987 Quinta do Cotto, Douro Tinto, Portugal: Bright medium garnet, bit of brick in the rim, medium viscosity, some floating sediment. Dung, iodine, fresh cut press board, somewhat chemical nose. Rather light body, some acidity, taste else according to smell (means in this case not very nice). Odd and slightly bitter finish. May be a bad bottle but may be not. Alcohol content with 11,5% rather low.

Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 8 for bouquet + 10 for taste + 3 for overall = total score of 74 but maybe this is not fair.

Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking. WMF Easy red wine glass.

1997 Chevillon, Les St. Georges, Nuits St. Georges, Burgundy, France: Light garnet, light rim, brilliant, high viscosity. Classic if not very expressive NSG nose after pure red fruit and some french oak, clean, hint of dark chocolate. Medium body, some good acidity (you have to be careful not to drink this like water against your thirst), decent red fruit, some decent silky and smoky tannins. Medium finish with persistent smoky tannins. Not a great wine but nice with food.

Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 89.

Not blind. Not decanted. WMF Easy red wine glass.

10.

Medium body, some acidity, dark fruit, soft tannins. Medium finish, slightly bitter aftertaste, bit hot. Not a prime example of a balanced wine, but better than expected.

Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 90.

Not blind. Not decanted. WMF Easy red wine glass.

After one day in the (half full) open bottle this wine is not exactly falling apart but is not far from it - quite unbalanced. Nose -1, taste -2 and overall -2 less in score.

13.

1999 Vignalta, Gemola (70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc), Colli Euganei Rosso, Italy: Medium to light purple, bright, nice tears, tints slightly the glass. Light barnyard and dark berries in the nose, cool moss, ascending alcohol (14% vol), bit of roots and earth. Medium to full body, good acidity, nice dark fruit, tannins rather decent but very fine. Medium long finish, red and dark fruit in the aftertaste, furry velvet.

Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 89.

2000 Mad (Haus Marienberg), Marienthal, Blaufränkisch, Neusiedlersee-Hügelland, Austria: Medium purple, clear, dense tears, tints slightly the glass, no sediment. Dense concentrated nose of black cherries syrup, some toast (vanilla, chocolate). Full body, dense concentrated black cherries fruit, good acidity behind, slightly bitter dark chocolate, good balance with tannins. Long and dense finish, gets a bit tartish in the end. An Amarone like wine out of Blaufränkisch? Zero typicity, but certainly impressive. No easy match with food, maybe with chocolate dessert.

Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 91.

Not blind. Not decanted. Small ISO standard tasting glass.

24.

Very fine match with ham and eggs (enhanced with some potatoes), ditto with almonds in chocolate.

Not blind. Decanted shortly before tasting. Small ISO standard tasting glass.

Medium to plump body, nice acidity, some dark and red fruit, good tannins. Long finish, bit tannic. Nice example of a 1998 Barbaresco. Good match with simple food, gets a bit sweet if the food is too spicy.

Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92.

From Memory. Not blind. Not decanted. Syrah type glass.

27.

2001 Quinta do Vale Dona Maria, Douro Tinto, Portugal: Brilliant purple, dense tears, tints the glass, very high viscosity. Very fine dark nose, multilayered, some toast, spices, cinnamon. Plump to full body, fine Vintage Port fruit, powerful acidity, decent soft tannins, well balanced, coriander, cinnamon. Velvety acidity in the aftertaste, fine fruit. Good match with simple food like white bread with butter and fresh cut green coriander or some cookies with cinnamon. Excellent value. Exciting question how this wine will show with some age.

Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 95.

Not blind. Decanted shortly before tasting. Glass&Co Syrah type glass.
