1989 Aldo Conterno, Bussia Soprana, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy: Light garnet, brilliant with a lot of sediment to avoid, dense tears. Mature Barolo nose, earthy, resinous, some mushrooms. Medium body, bit of mature fruit, rather tannic, mineral and earthy, fine acidity, in total good balance if a bit austere. Long finish, persistent tannins. For me on or near peak now. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92. Tasted2005Apr. Score92. From memory. Not blind. Not decanted. Generic red wine glass Syrah style. 1990 Aldo Conterno, Bussia Soprana, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy: Light purple, fat tears, slightly brownish in the rim, baked sediment on the side of the bottle. Clean nose, soft fruit, some black earth. Medium body, decent red and dark fruit, soft acidity, silky persistent tannins, well balanced. Long finish, persistent silky velvety tannins. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92. Tasted2005Apr. Score92. Not blind. Not decanted. Small ISO standard tasting glass. 1990 Moccagatta, Bric Balin, Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy: Medium garnet, brick rim, very brilliant, dense tears, very heavy sediment. Slightly pungent nose, tar, resinous, some dark fruit. Medium body, soft acidity, soft velvety tannins, hint of mature dark fruit, bit mineral and earthy. Long finish, soft velvety persistent tannins. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. Tasted2005Apr. Score93. Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking. Schott Zwiesel red wine glass. 1991 Jamet, Cote Rotie, Rhone, France: Brilliant light ruby, dense tears, crusted sediment. Very soft barnyard, clean dark fruit, cool, earthy, ascending alcohol. Medium body, velvety dark fruit, crisp acidity, soft bit grainy tannins, good balance. Long finish, persistent tannins, slightly bitter in the end. Very fine. 1994 Leoville Las Cases, St. Julien, Bordeaux, France: Brilliant medium ruby, nice tears, bit of sediment. Dark fruit and licorice in the nose. Medium body, licorice, green bell pepper, fine acidity, velvety tannins. Long aftertaste, persistent tannins. Not great but not bad either. 1994 Pontet Canet, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France: Medium ruby, bright, fat tears, good deal of fine sediment. Very nice dark fruity nose, clean, beginning of maturity. Medium body, clean fruity acidity, fine dark fruit, nice tannins, good balance. Medium to long finish, quite persistent tannins. Very versatile even with "no wine" food. Medium to chubby body, soft dark fruit, bit rustic, slightly bitter, bit thin in the middle, not too soft tannins. Long aftertaste, mouth impregnating bit coarse tannins. 1997 Confuron, Chambolle Musigny, Cote d'Or, Burgundy, France: Light to medium garnet, bright, nice tears, nearly no sediment. Very intense spicy nose, dark red fruit, bit caramelized, kitchen herbs, lovage. Medium body, sweet and nice red fruity acidity, bit coarse tannins, nicely balanced. Medium to long finish, persistent tannins, sweet fruity acidity in the aftertaste, same time a trace of cacao bitterness. Quite impressive for a simple Village wine vintage 1997, had to retaste it to believe it. Obviously versatile with food. 1999 Niepoort, Redoma, Douro Tinto, Portugal: Brilliant medium purple, very dense tears, some fine floating sediment, tints the glass. Dense dark fruit in the nose, bit pungent ascending alcohol, honeycomb. Medium to full body, nice fruit note after small dark berries, well integrated fruity acidity, good deal of slightly coarse tannins. Long finish, dark fruity acidity and persistent tannins. Should gain more balance with some age. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 92. Tasted2005Apr. Score91. Single blind. 2000 Pinhal da Torre, Quinta de Sao Joao, Touriga Nacional, Ribatejo Tinto, Portugal: Medium to dark purple, bright, dense tears, some baked tartaric sediment, tints the glass. Fast fading hint of barnyard, silky mix of dark berries, bit resinous, tar and mushrooms. Medium body, silky but intense dark fruit, well integrated tingly acidity, slightly sweet coating tannins. Medium to long finish, mouth coating tannins, bit of black pepper in the end. Enough structure to handle savoury dishes. 2001 Clarendon Hills, Blewitt Springs Vineyard, Old Vines Grenache, Clarendon, Australia: Brilliant dark ruby, fat tears, no sediment. Sweet red currant nose, young and concentrated. Plump body, concentrated red currant again, bit sweet bitter, acidity well hidden, tannins very soft but persistent. Very long finish, soft velvety tannins linger. There seems room for development. Reminds me to some degree of the 1999 Beaux Freres, Pinot Noir and also the 2000 Charvin CdP - somewhere in between. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 90. Tasted2005Apr. Score90. Not blind. Double decanted shortly before tasting. 2001 Pinhal da Torre, Quinta do Alqueve, Touriga Nacional/Syrah, Ribatejo, Portugal: Dark purple, dense but bright, medium tears, tints the glass. Very young, restrained nose, clean and ripe dark fruit, sweet, soft, cool. Medium to plump body, sound acidity, sappy dark fruit, very primary now, strong tannins, some imbalance towards acidity, nice warm mouth feeling, quite some structure. Long finish, dark fruity acidity, persistent velvety tannins. Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 92. Tasted2005Apr. Score92. Not blind. 2001 Quinta do Crasto, Touriga Nacional, Douro Tinto, Portugal: Black purple, very fat tears, no sediment, tints the glass. Smoky dark fruit in the nose, restrained but powerful. Full body, intense but soft dark fruit, velvety tannins hide solid acidity, well balanced. Long finish, quite dense fruit, persistent smoky tannins. Not exactly elegant, rather powerful, everything is here in balanced abundance, kind of medicine . Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. Medium to slim body, green bell pepper, some overripe fruit in the acidity, soft velvety tannins, kind of red currant wine. Medium finish, quite some tannins, bit rotten fruit in the aftertaste. 2002 Quinta do Vale Meao, Vinho Tinto, Douro, Portugal: Dense dark purple, dense tears, tints the glass, no sediment. Dark fruity nose, velvety tannins. Full but styled body, dense dark fruit, quite some acidity, strong but velvety tannins. For a Vale Meao even a bit austere. Aftertaste intense velvety tannins, very long.
