1995 Pegau, Cuvée Laurence, Chateauneuf du Pape,
Rhone, France: Brilliant light ruby, light rim, dense tears, some fine
sediment. Rather mature nose, soft sweet dark and red fruit, not oxidized but
not far from it, maybe some spices. Nicely stuffed body, nice red fruit,
slightly furry like peach skin, soft fruity acidity and very soft tannins,
very well balanced. Good finish, velvety tannins and bit of red fruit in the
long aftertaste. Versatile with food. Excellent bottle, ready for drinking,
but will hold or even develop for another 10-15 years. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for
taste + 9 for overall = total score of 95. Not blind. Decanted 2 hours before drinking. Small

2000 Dugat-Py, Cuvée Halinard, Bourgogne rouge,
Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy, France: Light purple, clear, reasonable tears.
Nose after fresh fermenting mash and fresh distilled grape brandy. Slim body,
some slightly green red berries, fine acidity, some tannins, no oak. No
special finish, slightly fruity aftertaste. Good with a simple meal, fine
with dark chocolate with cacao bean chips. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for
taste + 6 for overall = total score of 87. Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking. Small

2001 Bosquet des Papes,
Chante le Merle, Chateauneuf du Pape, Rhone, France: Medium ruby, bright,
high viscosity, no sediment. Sweet red fruit in the nose, bit primary and
young. Medium to plump body, primary red fruit, good acidity and intense
tannins, very dry. Long finish, some acidity, very dry tannins, slightly
burning aftertaste. Score: 50 + 4 for optic +
13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92. Not blind. Decanted shortly

1996 La Torre, Rosso di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy:
Medium to light garnet, light rim, hint of brick. Dark slightly sweet fruit
note in the nose, decent velvety. Medium body, slightly sweet red fruit, nice
acidity, bit dry tannins, in total well balanced. Good finish, some fruity
acidity, rather dry tannins in the end. Not very complex, but nice. Versatile
with food. Not so far away from a 1990 Barolo. Top wine in its range. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for
taste + 7 for overall = total score of 90. Double blind. Decanted shortly before drinking.

1989 Aldo Conterno, Bussia Soprana, Barolo,
Piedmont, Italy: Medium garnet, brilliant, fat tears, lots of sediment (baked
on the side of the bottle). Nose with tar and earthy fruit. Medium body,
mature fruit, quite good acidity, very fine silky tannins, very well
balanced. Very long, some fruity acidity and persistent velvety tannins.
Quite excellent now. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for
taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking. Small

Blancs, Champagne, France: Slightly golden bright yellow, micro bubbles.
Prickling nose. Medium body, slightly nutty taste, refreshing. Nice
aftertaste. Excellent starter and fair match with roasted foie gras. Magnum. Not blind. Nachtmann Champagne glass. |

2000 Chapoutier, L’Ermite, Hermitage blanc, Rhone,
France: Light golden yellow, brilliant, fat tears. Floral nose with note of
peaches and apricots, slightly fat. Full to plump body, low acidity, sweet
melon, very fine tannins, slightly fat. Very long aftertaste, very soft
fruity acidity, very soft tannins. Excellent match with Jansons Frestelse. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for

France: Pale yellow gold, high viscosity, bright. Soft sweet muscat nose. Medium
body, clearly sweet but not too intense. Nice aftertaste. Good match with

France: Dark ruby, very dense tears, strong sediment. Medium barnyard, dark
and red fruit, honey comb. Medium body, very good acidity, mature fruit, soft
but firm tannins, very well balanced. Long finish. Surprising good match with
different kind of cheese. Score : 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for

purple, bright, dense tears, tints slightly the glass, some sediment. Rooty
nose, some wet black earth, dark fruit, cool moss. Plump body, surprisingly
soft but intense in taste, dense dark fruit, massive tannins, good acidity,
well balanced. Long finish, soft tannins and acidity. Good stand alone
drinking. Score : 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 18 for

intense dark berries, liquorice, green bell pepper. Medium body, nice dark

balanced. Medium finish, soft fruity acidity, soft tannins in the end. Good

2001 Quinta de Roriz (Partnership of van Zeller and
Symington), Reserva (varieties Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Touriga
Franca), Douro Tinto, Portugal: Dark purple, nearly black, but brilliant,
nice tears, no sediment. Sweet dark fruit, slightest hint of barnyard, bit
sweet toasty roasted aromas. Plump body, slightly concentrated fruit, bit
sweet, some acidity behind and a good amount of tannins, may be a bit oaky
and of international style. Hard to match with food, best would be some
chocolate based dessert. Possibly a long distance runner, don't know. Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for

Bosquet des Papes, Chateauneuf du Pape rouge, Rhone, France: Medium garnet,
brick rim, dense tears, baked sediment. Very ripe fruit and spices in the nose, prunes, coriander,
lovage. Medium body, mature sappy fruit, soft acidity and silky tannins well
balanced. Long aftertaste, soft acidity and silky tannins. It seems to make
sense to drink this rather cool with about 16°C. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for

1996 Mission Hill, Private Reserve, Cabernet
Sauvignon, West Bank Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada: Very light and
bright garnet, light rim, nice tears. Sightly oxidized nose with clean fruit.
Slim to light body, some red fruit, good acidity, green bell pepper, soft
tannins. Short finish, slightly bitter and vegetal aftertaste. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 11 for bouquet + 15 for

1998 Scavino, Bric del Fiasc, Barolo, Piedmont,
Italy: Dark garnet with brownish touch, clear, dense tears. Slightly over
ripe nose, plums, bit earth and tar. Plump body, well balanced, rather fruity
for a Barolo, good acidity and surprisingly soft tannins, slightly hot. Good
finish, fine fruity acidity and soft tannins. This is nice to drink even when
young. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for

1989 Cigliuti, Serraboella, Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy:
Very bright and light ruby, dense tears, some sediment. Nice nose, hint of
tar, mineral, bit dark fruit. Medium to slim body, well balanced, decent dark
fruit, acidity well integrated, persistent tannins. Velvety finish, long,
mouth impregnating, soft fruity acidity. This bottle is one of the best
Serraboellas 1989 I had lately. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for

Casa Burmester, Reserva, Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Douro,
Portugal: Medium purple, brilliant, fat tears, some sediment. Nose some fruit muted by oak, cacao, roasted
coffee. Medium to plump body, fine acidity, nice dark fruit, very juicy, good
tannins, nice balance. Medium finish, soft sweet sour fruit, some silky but
persistent tannins. Kind of international style, but very well made. Nice
acidity. Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for
taste + 7 for overall = total score of 92. Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking. Riedel Vinum Burgundy glass. 13% alc/vol. Bottle # 5122 out of 30.500. Information from the producer concerning the 1998
vintage - should be similar for 2001: 50% Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz each.
Average age of vines 25 years. Average annual yield 42 hl/ha. After crushing
and destemming, the grapes were placed in stone lagares (tanks) and trodden
intensely for 6 days and 4 days of traditional maceration in stainless steel
tanks at constant fermentation temperatures of 28ºC. After malolactic
fermentation, the wine aged in casks of French oak (Allier); Portuguese oak
and American oak. |

Vaillé, Grange des Pères, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault rouge, (Syrah, Mourvèdre, CS),
Languedoc, France: Rather light, brilliant purple, very dense tears, no
sediment. Complex nose, red and dark
berries, bit of barnyard in the beginning, goes away after some minutes in
the glass, spicy tannins. Plump body, fine acidity, clean, pure red fruit,
tannins very well integrated. Long finish, soft but persistent tannins, bit
of black pepper in the end. Versatile with food. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for

(Haus Marienberg), Marienthal, Blaufränkisch, Neusiedlersee-Hügelland,
Austria: Dark ruby, light violet rim, clear, dense tears, no sediment. Decent
sweet dark fruit, dark toast, chocolate, cacao. Plump body, black cherries fruit with good acidity,
dark toasted oak, bit light in the middle, smoky tannins. Medium finish, a
bit tartish, pepper and tannins in the end. Not as dense as the 2000, may be
a bit too much toasted oak. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for

1997 Cailloux, Chateauneuf du Pape rouge, Rhone,
France: Medium to light garnet, light rim, brilliant, fat tears. Bit austere
nose, slightly vegetal, green bell pepper (may be a bit too much sulphur).
Medium body (despite 14% alcohol), low fruit, low acidity, some tannins - not
hot but also not very impressive. Aftertaste slightly bitter furry tannins.
May be a weak bottle or else if representative a prototype for forced
winemaking in a weak vintage. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for

1990 Pibarnon, Bandol Rouge, Provence, France:
Medium carmine, light rim, nice tears, some sediment. Resinous nose, black
olives, dark berries, earthy. Medium body, earthy resinous, spicy, rooty, black
olives, acidity and tannins well balanced. Good finish, slightly coarse
tannins in the end. Fine with some hefty food. Used this bottle to marinate a
wild boar leg but had to taste a glass. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for
taste + 7 for overall = total score of 90. Not blind. Not decanted (but long decanting time up
to 24h recommended, may be even double decanting necessary). Small ISO

1997 Vogue, Les Amoureuses, Chambolle Musigny 1er
Cru, Burgundy, France: Medium garnet, light rim, good viscosity, bit of
floating sediment. Classic PN nose, dark red fruit, clean and pure,
attractive perfumed. Medium body, nice fruity acidity, clean red fruit,
raspberry, good tannins background, nicely balanced. Medium long finish, soft
acidity, silky persistent tannins, slightly sweet then bitter in the end.

Light ruby, brilliant, dense tears, some sediment in the bottom of the
bottle. Complex nose, soft red an dark fruit, dark earth, mineral. Medium to
plump body, bright fruity acidity, velvety but not too soft tannins, very
well balanced. Long finish, velvety persistent tannins. Quite excellent, on
top. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for

1989 Pradeaux, Bandol Rouge, Provence, France:
Medium purple, fine floating sediment, light brick rim, good viscosity. Soft
velvety nose, earthy mushrooms, some dark fruit, roots. Medium body, some red
fruit, well balanced, good tannins, fine acidity. Aftertaste dark fruit with
dry tannins in the end. Used this for cooking and had to take a sip. Quite
mature now, but will hold at least some years. Severe decanting is recommended.

2001 Ricardelle, Vignelacroix, La Clape, Languedoc,
France: Bright dark ruby, dense tears, no sediment. Sweet dark fruit in the
nose, bit resinous, rather nice. Plump body, sweet dark fruit with some
bitterness attached, low acidity, bit coarse tannins. Slightly hot in the
finish. Good match with various cheeses with fruits. The bottle suggests a
sweet wine so I was a bit surprised that this is a dry red. The reason for
half bottles remains unclear Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for
