1990 Conterno Fantino, Sori Ginestra, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy: Light garnet, brilliant, bit of brick, good viscosity. Bit of tar, earth, truffles, smoked raw ham in the nose, slightly pungent. Medium to medium light body, velvety acidity, intense tannins, good balance, only a hint of ripe fruit. Long to medium finish, persistent tannins, slightly bitter aftertaste. Quite mature now. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 91. Not blind. Decanted shortly before drinking. Small ISO standard tasting glass. Bottle count reduced by one


 

2001 Guigal, La Turque, Cote Rotie, Rhone, France: 93

2001 Guigal, La Turque, Cote Rotie, Rhone, France: Medium ruby, brilliant, fine tears, no sediment. Good toast, dark chocolate and hint of apricot in the nose, small glass more concentration and slightly green tannins, Burgundyglass soft and cool with spices, better nose. Medium body, fresh acidity (more so in the small glass - sweet sour drops), some red fruit, fine tannins, great balance. Medium long finish, soft aftertaste, persistent tannins with a touch of acidity. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. Not blind. 1997 Triebaumer Ernst, Mariental, Blaufränkisch, Burgenland, Austria: Dark purple, clear but core opaque, dense tears, tints slightly the glass. Dark and cool nose, decent velvety nose. Medium body, serious acidity, good red dark fruit, hint of spices, velvety tannins. Medium finish, velvety tannins with sweet sour drops acidity behind in the aftertaste. Score: 50 + 5 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 92. Magnum. Not blind. Decanted shortly before tasting.

2003 Loimer, Dechant, Pinot Noir, Kamptal, Austria: Very light ruby, light rim, nice tears, brilliant, no sediment. Red fruits with dark chocolate mingled with some toast in the nose, quite decent. Medium body, good red fruity acidity, sweet dark chocolate note (may be a touch too much toast), very soft silky tannins, good balance. Medium finish, soft tannins, slightly bitter aftertaste, warm feeling. Used this wine for marinating chicken for Coq au Vin and reserved a glass for tasting. Nice wine. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 90. Not blind. Decanted some hours before tasting. Small ISO standard tasting glass

1997 Confuron, Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru, Cote d'Or, Burgundy, France: Very light garnet with a hint of brick, bright, high viscosity. Spicy nose, white pepper, red fruit, some toast. Medium body, bit flat despite some slightly coarse acidity, velvety tannins. Medium long finish, lingering velvety tannins with a slightly acid aftertaste. Certainly a good choice for a decent meal, not so great stand alone. Will use this for cooking Coq au Vin this evening and had to try a glass. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 89. Not blind. Not decanted. Small ISO standard tasting glass. Bottle count reduced by one

1993 Trapet (Jean and Jean-Louis), Chambertin Grand Cru, Gevrey-Chambertin, Cote d'Or, Burgundy, France: Very light garnet, hint of brick, brilliant, fat tears. Powerful nose with a hint of red coated Chambertin cheese, dark red fruit, spicy alcoholic. Medium body, silky but prominent acidity, may be a bit hin in the middle, hint of mature red fruit, very silky tannins, taste not as impressive as the nose. Long finish, palate impregnating smoky tannins with a hint of black pepper. Will serve this with fried foie gras on leaf salad this evening as dinner opener. Hopefully a good match. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92. Not blind. Not decanted. Small ISO standard tasting glass. Bottle count reduced by one

Soft dried red fruits in the mature nose, hint of red coated Chambertin cheese, spicy. Medium body, nice if a bit stalky persistent tannins, good but not prominent acidity behind, some red fruit, good balance, slightly austere. Long finish, bit dusty melting acidity with slightly coarse tannins in the end. Will serve this with Coq au Vin this evening for dinner, should be a nearly perfect match. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 94. Not blind. Not decanted. Small ISO standard tasting glass. Bottle count reduced by one

Soft red fruits nose, hint of red coated Chambertin cheese, herbs. Medium body, melting red fruity acidity, silky to velvety persistent tannins, good grip, good balance, kind of refreshing taste. Medium to long finish, hint of sweet-sour drops, persistent smoky tannins. Will serve this with Coq au Vin this evening for dinner, should be a very good match. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. Not blind. Not decanted. Small ISO standard tasting glass. Bottle count reduced by one

2001 Guigal, La Mouline, Cote Blonde, Cote Rotie, Rhone, France: Dark ruby, brilliant, fine tears, no sediment. Cool dark dried fruit nose, some toast. Medium body, surprising fresh acidity, dark red fruit, silky sweet tannins, good balance. Medium to long finish, very persistent tannins with a touch of acidity, black pepper in the aftertaste. First moment hard job after a fine Burgundy as usual, but gaining momentum after some time. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. Not blind. 1994 Gravner, Chardonnay, Friuli, Italy: Brilliant gold, good viscosity. Bit of dry Sherry in the nose, tropic fruits, nuts and dried yellow fruits. Medium to full body, low but still noticeable sweet lime type acidity, hints of exotic fruits, creamy tannins, excellent balance. Medium long finish with a very nice lime aftertaste. This is one of the few white wines I want more than one glass from. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 94. From memory. Magnum. Not blind. Classic CdP-nose. Medium body, very soft and ripe red fruit, melting acidity, soft tannins,well balanced. Medium long finish, nice aftertaste. Medium, some red fruit, slightly animal character, soft tannins, good balance. Medium long finish, hint of ginger in the aftertaste. Very good match with lamb stew. 1981 Mas Blanc (Dr. Parcé), Banyuls Rimage, Vins Doux Naturels, Languedoc Roussillon, France: Dark ruby, very high oily viscosity. Intense crushed red dark berries nose. Full body, ripe delicate sweet red dark berries fruit, Vintage Port like, alcohol, acidity and tannins well balanced. Long finish, dried red dard fruits in the aftertaste. Excellent match with a chocolate coated nuts tart but also with cheese. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. From memory. Not blind. 1990 Prunotto, Montestefano, Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy: Very light brilliant ruby, light rim, fat tears. Cool mineral nose, fallen oak leaves, bit of tar and truffles, it total very decent and same time complex. Medium body, silky velvety persistent tannins, good acidity, decent sweet dark red fruit, excellent balance. Long finish, sweet warm velvety aftertaste, hint of bitterness in the end. Quite excellent, versatile with food. Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. Not blind. Not decanted, but bottle opened and after one glass for my wife recorked 24 hours before tasting.

2002 Tasca d’Almerita, Rosso del Conte, Nero d'Avola with a splash of Perricone, Sicily, Italy: Bright purple, fat tears, tints the glass, small tartaric crystals. Clean very dark fruit and heavy toast in the nose. Medium full to full body, sweet dark fruit, slightly hidden but strong acidity, slightly bitter tannins may be from oak. Medium long finish, aftertaste sweet dark fruit with hint of slightly bitter tannins may be from oak. Intense taste, despite the local varietal more of international style albeit versatile with food. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 91. Not blind. From memory. Not decanted. Generic small white wine glass.

Very dark slightly cooked nose, hint of soy sauce, green walnuts, fresh distilled grape brandy. Medium full to full body, very dark fruit, good deal of silky acidity, hint of sweet sour drops, not too soft tannins, bit hot. Medium long to long finish, dark chocolate aftertaste, slightly hot. A trace too hot, else this would be a highly interesting wine. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 90. Not blind. Not decanted. Medium to slim body, fresh acidity, some red fruit masked by toast and bit coarse tannins, slightly bitter. Medium to short finish on the acid side. Not a great wine but OK with food. 1999 Montrose, St. Estephe, Bordeaux, France: Dark ruby/light purple, clear, good viscosity. Very classic Bordeaux type nose. Medium body, soft dark fruit, some liquorice, nicely balanced. Medium finish, soft tannins. Delicious wine at least partly due to the low alcohol content of 12,5% - a relief compared with the else usual blockbuster trend. 1999 Roda, Cirsion, Rioja, Spain: Black purple, tints the glass. Dark, soft and sweet nose. Medium full to full body, not hot despite the 15.5% alcohol, very soft dard fruit, very soft velvety tannins, acidity clearly here but rather hidden, good balance. Long finish, very soft. Just another wine that has it basically all - but at the loss of any typicity. Would never take this wine for a Rioja. Interesting wine anyway, maybe a bit too expensive. Intense dark nose with a vegetable touch, ascending alcohol (difficult perception due to cold). Medium to full body, intense dark red fruit, velvety tannins, slightly hot. Long finish, velvety fruity tannins, slightly hot. Difficult match with food. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 91. Not blind.
