2001 Moillard, Romanée St. Vivant GC, Burgundy, France:
Optic: Light ruby, brilliant, fat tears, some sediment baked on the side of the bottle.
Bouquet: Whiff of barnyard and fresh distilled grapes, some dark red fruit and green herbs, vermouth.
Taste: Medium body, silky melting acidity, bit of red fruit, soft bit persistent bit smoky tannins, good balance. Very long finish, smoky tannins and sweet melting acidity in the aftertaste.
Overall: Excellent bottle. Confirms my impression that Burgundy 2001 is quite good to drink even if still very young.
Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93.

1997 Armand Rousseau, Clos St. Jacques, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France:
Optic: Very light garnet, light rim, brilliant, nice tears, bit of floating sediment, last glass therefore a bit dusty.
Bouquet: Very mature and attractive nose with a multitude of clean fruit, vegetal and mineral aromas, complex.
Taste: Medium body, crisp but sweet melting acidity, clean red fruit, fine silky smoky persistent tannins, good balance. Long finish with persistent silky tannins.
Overall: Quite a very attractive bottle. Very versatile with a wide range of food.

1999 Felsina, Fontalloro, IGT, Tuscany, Italy:
Optic: Medium ruby, brilliant, fat tears, no sediment.
Bouquet: Dark fruity nose, bit alcoholic, prunes.
Taste: Medium full body, crisp acidity, slightly hot, dark red fruit, slightly coarse tannins. Medium to long finish, coarse velvety tannins, bit hot.
Overall: Bottle with good Sangiovese typicity, versatile with meat dishes.

1998 Contrade, Labirinto, Nero d'Avola, Sicily, Italy:
Optic: Medium purple, high viscosity, fine dark coloured tartaric sediment.
Bouquet: Oaky nose, cool dark fruit, some toast.
Taste: Medium full body, clean dark fruit, good acidity, slightly hot. Medium long finish, velvety fruity tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: A bit oaky, else very nice.

1994 Tissot, Vin Jaune (100% Savagnin, 6 years in cask without topping, intentionally oxidised, not fortified, 62cl bottle, 14,5% alc vol), Arbois, Jura, France:
Optic: Bright gold yellow, very clear, no sediment.
Bouquet: Nose like a fine Fino, oxidised, clean, bit nutty.
Taste: Rather full body, taste like a fine Fino sherry, crisp acidity, tannins barely noticeable.
Overall: Interesting wine. Good match with a polenta based dish called "Steirischer Sterz", should be an excellent match with shellfish, especially with raw oysters. Open bottle keeps some time as it is already oxidised.

1994 Pichon Longueville Comtesse Lalande, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France:
Optic: Dark ruby, clear, some sediment.
Bouquet: Clean dark berries, trace of liquorice.
Taste: Medium body, clean dark fruit, fine acidity, decent tannins, good balance. Medium long finish, soft fruity tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Good match with fried Treviso with Prosciutto. Good Bordeaux benchmark wine now.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 91.

1990 Oberto, Vigneto Rocche, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy:
Optic: Medium garnet, nice tears, good deal of sediment.
Bouquet: Typical earthy mineral nose of a mature Barolo.
Taste: Medium body, massive austere and slightly bitter tannins, good acidity, hint of fruit, earthy and mineral notes. Long finish, slightly bitter tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: As always an excellent match with a salad of young dandelions leafs, buds and hearts (top of the roots). Down to my last bottle of this wine.

2002 Böheim, Blaufränkisch Reserve, Carnuntum, Austria:
Optic: Medium ruby, violet rim, fat tears, no sediment.
Bouquet: Toasted oak, roasted dark fruit.
Taste: Medium body, bit roasted dark fruit, hint of red currant acidity, soft velvety tannins. Long finish, slightly bitter burning tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: May be a bit too oaky, else nice to drink.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 88.

2002 Weninger, Dürrau, Blaufränkisch, Burgenland, Austria:
Optic: Brilliant medium ruby, very fat tears, some sediment.
Bouquet: Some dark fruit and spices in the nose, clean, bit cool, hint of oak but well integrated.
Taste: Medium body to medium full, nice soft fruity acidity, dark fruit, velvety tannins. Long finish, quite persistent soft tannins with a slightly burning aftertaste.
Overall: Certainly one of the best Austrian Blaufränkisch wines.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 92.

2001 Chateau de Roquefort, Rubrum Obscurum (Grenache, Carignan and Mourvedre), Cotes de Provence, France:
Optic: Dark ruby, core opaque, rim watery, tints the glass, fat tears.
Bouquet: Bit animal, cool moss, rooty, earthy, spicy.
Taste: Full to medium foll body, sweet dark fruit, rather spiky acidity, bit coarse tannins. Medium finish, warm velvety tannins in the aftertaste and again the spiky acidity.
Overall: Probably interesting wine in some years, now a bit unbalanced.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 15 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 88.

1997 Les Cailloux, Chateauneuf du Pape rouge, Rhone, France:
Optic: Light garnet, brick rim, brilliant, fat tears, floating sediment.
Bouquet: Slightly animal nose, red berries, mature.
Taste: Medium body, bit of red fruit, low to none acidity, soft tannins, slightly animal touch. Medium long finish, bit of white pepper in the aftertaste.
Overall: No great bottle, but good typicity, nice drinking.
Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 89.

1990 Rosi Schuster, Blaufränkisch Classic, Burgenland, Austria:
Optic: Medium ruby, bricky rim, nice tears, tiny bubbles in the rim.
Bouquet: Very mature nose, hint of dark red fruit, herbs, quite nice.
Taste: Medium to slim body, nice follow through, crisp fruity acidity, very decent tannin structure, hint of dark red fruit. Medium long finish, fruity acidity and some soft velvety tannins in the aftertaste.
Overall: Versatile with food. No great but never the less remarkable wine as this is a rare opportunity to taste a really mature Blaufränkisch.

1998 Laffitte-Teston, Vieilles Vignes, Madiran, France:
Optic: Dark purple, opaque core, dense tears.
Bouquet: Slightly cool and bit resinous dark fruit, sweet roots.
Taste: Medium body, crisp acidity, silky dark fruit, soft tannins, good tannins. Medium long finish, nice dark fruity acidity, soft tannins, liquorice in the aftertaste.
Overall: Quite interesting also with some age, more silky smoothness instead of pure power.

1990 Moccagatta, Bric Balin, Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy:
Optic: Light garnet, some brick note, fat tears, incredible amount of floating and baked sediment.
Bouquet: Mature, resinous, spices, lovage.
Taste: Medium body, good acidity, fine velvety tannins, only a hint of red fruit. Long finish, soft impregnating tannins
Overall: Great bottle again.

1989 Lynch Bages, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France:
Optic: Dark purple, clear, fat tears, some floating coarse sediment.
Bouquet: Bit resinous, dark fruit, quite excellent nose.
Taste: Medium full body, mature dark fruit, soft tannins and elegant acidity. Long finish, soft persistent tannins, decent fruit in the aftertaste.
Overall: Impressive intensity in taste despite a mere 12,5% alc vol, great wine. Also versatile with food.
Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 18 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 94.

1989 Cigliuti, Serraboella, Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy:
Optic: Light bricked ruby, dense tears, good deal of fine floating sediment.
Bouquet: Mature nose, dried herbs, mineral and earthy notes.
Taste: Medium body, mature dark fruit, silky acidity, persistent tannins, good balance. Long finish, soft persistent tannins.
Overall: Already very mature now, develops rather fast in the decanter but may hold in the bottle certainly some more years.
Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 91.

2002 Fürst, Frühburgunder (Pinot Noir Clone), Franken, Germany:
Optic: Light garnet, bright, fat tears, no sediment.
Bouquet: Dark red Pinot Noir fruit.
Taste: Medium to medium full body, low acidity, hint of red fruit, very soft tannins. Medium long finish, soft fruit.
Overall: International Pinot Noir type of wine. One wonders: How is such low acidity possible for a such rather northern wine region?
Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 12 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 6 for overall = total score of 87.

2002 Schloss Proschwitz (Prinz zur Lippe), Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) Barrique, Meissen, Sachsen, Germany:
Optic: Light ruby, very fat tears, no sediment.
Bouquet: Dark red fruit, good PN-typicity.
Taste: Rather full bodied, soft, low acidity, dark red fruit, silky tannins. Medium long finish, persistent tannins.
Overall: Quite typical german Spätburgunder - means rather low acidity and very soft tannins.
Score: 50 + 3 for optic + 13 for bouquet + 16 for taste + 7 for overall = total score of 89.

2003 Hensel, Ikarus (Cabernet Cubin=Cabernet Sauvignon x Lemberger=Blaufränkisch), Bad Dürkheim, Pfalz, Germany:
Optic: Black purple, bubbles in the rim, dense tears tint the glass.
Bouquet: Dark fruity slightly oaky nose, velvety.
Taste: Full body, velvety texture, dark fruit, bit austere tannins, bit bitter, well integrated acidity. Long finish, velvety austere dark fruity tannins in the aftertaste. Tongue and gums severely blue tinted.
Overall: Bit unexpected and quite impressive for a German red wine.
