Parker: For present consumption, this wine is one of my favorite Leoville-Las Cases. The color is a deep, healthy ruby with purple tints. The wine reveals a classic Las Cases nose of cassis, minerals, lead pencil, and vanilla. Medium to full-bodied, with outstanding concentration and soft tannin, this classically rendered, fleshy, yet stylish wine can be drunk now or cellared for another 15+ years. It is another example where the 1985 may prove to be a modern day clone of the 1953. 91 Punkte

Parker: The 1988 is a star of the vintage. The full-intensity bouquet of pure black-cherries and toasty new oak represents the classic aromatic profile of Las Cases. Beautifully balanced, medium-bodied, concentrated flavors exhibit wonderful ripeness and excellent tannins. The 1988 Leoville-Las-Cases avoids the harsh, dry astringent tannins and vegetal taste of many 1988s. Today, the 1988 looks under-valued. Anticipated maturity: 1995-2020. Parker: My notes on the 1989 and 1990 wines have been consistent over the last three years. The 1989 continues to lose ground, although it is obviously an outstanding wine, while the 1990 continues to escalate in quality. The 1989 tasted California-like in its ripe, sweet, black-cherry fruit, nicely-integrated, toasty new oak, and clean, pure winemaking style. A tighter, more compact finish is the result of elevated tannin, but this is an outstanding, rich, medium-weight Las Cases that tastes less well-endowed than I originally predicted. It is built more along the lines of the classy, elegant 1985 than the blockbuster 1982 and 1986. The wine is still youthful, with no amber at the edge of its healthy deep ruby/purple color. It will improve for another 8-12 years, and then plateau, offering very fine drinking over the subsequent two decades. 91 Punkte

Parker: The 1990 Hermitage-La Chapelle is a monumental Hermitage. It is almost black in color. When I saw it again with Jaboulet, it was paired against the 1989, 1988, 1983, and 1978. It will prove to be the finest La Chapelle made since 1961. Remarkably, it is even richer, deeper, and more highly extracted than the perfect 1978. The percentage of new oak was increased to 50% because of the wine's power. The maceration period lasted an amazing 44 days. While Jaboulet experimented with filtration during the mid-eighties, this wine was put in the bottle with no processing. The huge nose of pepper, underbrush, and black fruits displays amazing intensity. In the mouth, the wine has awesome concentration, extraordinary balance and power, and a fabulously long, huge finish that lasts for more than a minute. The tannins are considerable, but the lavish quantities of sweet fruit and multi-dimensional, layered feel to the wine make it one of the most incredible young red wines I have ever tasted. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2040+. It is a legend in the making! Having gone through Jaboulet's 1990 red wine offerings five times (four for the Hermitage-La Chapelle), I must say that this is the firm's best overall year since 1961. 99 Punkte
